"Don't Get Caught with Your Pants Down": The Golf Trousers Showdown

"Don't Get Caught with Your Pants Down": The Golf Trousers Showdown

When it comes to choosing trouser length, there are a few options from the leading women’s golf brands emerging this season!

Pedal Pushers or Clam Diggers

Pedal pushers are pants that typically end just below the knee or mid-calf and they are a classic style that has made a comeback in casual and sportswear. Pedal pushers are a type of pants that were popular in the 1950s and early 1960s. They are calf-length trousers that are often cuffed and worn tight to the skin. Pedal pushers are related in style to capri pants and are sometimes referred to as "clam diggers."

Originally, pedal pushers were designed for women who rode bicycles, as they allowed for greater freedom of movement than long skirts. However, they soon became popular as a fashion item, worn by women of all ages.

Advantages:

  • Breathability: The shorter length allows for more airflow, which can be ideal in warmer climates.
  • Freedom of Movement: The cropped length provides ease of movement, which is beneficial when swinging a golf club.
  • Retro Style: Pedal pushers can offer a vintage or retro look, which may appeal to those who enjoy a classic style.
  • Flattering style for women with all sizes of calf!

Considerations:

  • Weather Suitability: They are best suited for warm weather, as they leave the lower legs exposed.
  • Dress Codes: Some golf clubs may have specific dress codes that prefer longer pants or skirts.

Capri Pants

Capri pants were introduced by fashion designer Sonja de Lennart in 1948 and were popularised by her and English couturier Bunny Roger. The name of the pants is derived from the Italian isle of Capri where they rose to popularity in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Capri pants are also known as three quarter legs, capriscrop pants and (in the US) Clam Diggers. Capri pants are slightly longer than pedal pushers, ending around mid-calf or just above the ankle.

Advantages:

  • Versatility: Capri pants offer a balance between shorts and long trousers, making them suitable for various weather conditions.
  • Style Variety: Available in numerous styles, from fitted to relaxed, offering more options for personal style preferences.
  • Sun Protection: They provide more coverage than pedal pushers, offering additional sun protection.

Considerations:

  • Comfort Level: Some women may find the mid-calf length less comfortable, depending on the fit and fabric.
  • Proportion Consideration: The length can sometimes visually shorten the legs, which might be a consideration for some women.

Favourites!

  • Capri Pants : Capri pants are often a popular choice for their versatility and suitability across different weather conditions. They strike a balance between style and functionality.
  • Performance Fabrics: Many modern golf pants, whether pedal pushers, capris, or long trousers, are made from performance fabrics that wick moisture, provide stretch, and offer sun protection.
  • Fashion Influence: Current fashion trends can also influence preferences, with certain styles gaining popularity depending on what is in vogue.
